Tanzania Yellow Fever Requirements

Understanding Tanzania’s yellow fever regulations can be a bit confusing, but this guide will help clarify everything. Tanzania is officially a yellow fever-free country, making it a safe destination in terms of this viral disease. Below, we explain who needs the yellow fever vaccination, when it’s required, and what to do if you’re transiting through a high-risk area.

Do I Need a Yellow Fever Vaccine to Enter Tanzania?

In most cases, no, you do not need a yellow fever vaccination to travel to Tanzania.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Tanzania poses a low risk for yellow fever. If you are traveling directly from a country where yellow fever is not a concern—such as those in Europe or North America—you will not be required to show proof of vaccination upon entry.

What Is Yellow Fever?

Yellow fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection. After infection, symptoms typically appear within 3 to 6 days and can include fever, chills, headaches, and muscle pain. While many cases are mild, about 15% of infections can progress to a severe, potentially life-threatening illness.

Tanzania itself is not a yellow fever risk zone. However, regulations are in place to prevent the virus from being brought in from high-risk countries.

When Is the Yellow Fever Vaccine Required?

You must show proof of yellow fever vaccination only if you meet one of the following conditions:

  • You are arriving from a country classified as having a risk of yellow fever transmission.
  • You are transiting through a yellow fever risk country for 12 hours or more, such as during a layover.

This does not apply to travelers arriving directly from:

  • The United States
  • Canada
  • Any country in Europe
  • Other non-endemic regions

For the official list of yellow fever risk countries, refer to the WHO’s current guidelines.

Vaccination Timing and Proof

If the yellow fever vaccine is required based on your travel route:

  • You must receive it at least 10 days before your arrival in Tanzania.
  • It is administered as a single dose, offering lifetime protection.
  • You should carry a vaccination certificate (often referred to as the “Yellow Card”) to present at the border.

Medical Exemptions

If you are medically exempt from receiving the vaccine, ask your doctor for an official letter of exemption. This document must clearly state the reason for non-vaccination and can be presented to immigration officials upon entry to Tanzania. With proper documentation, your entry will not be denied.

Planning Ahead

If your travel itinerary includes transit through or arrival from a yellow fever-affected country, speak with your healthcare provider well in advance. They will help confirm whether vaccination is needed and issue any documentation required.
