Tanzania Entry Requirements: What You Need to Know 2025

All travelers are responsible for ensuring they meet the entry requirements for Tanzania. Because visa and passport rules vary by nationality and are subject to change, we strongly recommend consulting the official Tanzania Immigration Services website for the latest information before your trip.

Passport and Visa Basics

  • You must hold a valid passport with at least six months of validity from your date of arrival.
  • Most visitors will also need a visa to enter Tanzania.
  • Visas can be obtained:
    • Online in advance through the official e-visa portal (recommended)
    • On arrival at designated ports of entry (may involve delays)

Note: Many Tanzanian embassies no longer issue visas. The online visa application system is now the most reliable and efficient method.

Other Entry Requirements

To be granted entry, you may also need to provide:

  • A return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
  • A yellow fever vaccination certificate, if you’re arriving from or transiting through a country where yellow fever is endemic

Visa Exemptions

  • Citizens of non-Commonwealth countries generally require a visa unless a bilateral agreement with Tanzania provides an exemption.
  • Citizens of Commonwealth countries typically do not need a visa, except for those from the United Kingdom, Canada, Nigeria, and India, who must obtain one.

Visa Types and Validity

You must apply for the correct visa based on your travel purpose—tourism, business, study, or another authorized activity.

Visas are issued either online or at the following official points of entry:

  • Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
  • Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam (DAR)
  • Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, Zanzibar (ZNZ)
  • Land borders: Namanga, Tunduma, Sirari, Horohoro, Kigoma Port, Zanzibar Harbour

On Arrival Process

If you already have an e-visa, you’ll join the queue for pre-approved travelers. If you’re applying on arrival, you’ll be directed to a separate queue. Immigration forms are usually handed out on the plane but are also available at the airport. Submit your completed form along with your passport and payment to immigration officers.

Visa Fees (Payable on Arrival)

  • $50 USD for most nationalities
  • $100 USD for U.S. citizens

All visa payments must be made in US dollars (cash only).

Travel Advisory

We recommend applying for your visa well in advance through the official e-visa platform. This helps avoid delays and ensures a smoother entry process at the airport.
