People Don’t Take, Trips Take People

Arusha National Park

Introduction

Arusha National Park is a small but incredibly diverse park located in northern Tanzania, just 25 km (about 45 minutes) from the city of Arusha. Covering an area of about 552 square kilometers (212 square miles), it is one of Tanzania’s most accessible safari destinations, making it ideal for day trips or short excursions.

Despite its compact size, the park is rich in wildlife, landscapes, and activities—from volcanic craters and lush forests to lakes filled with flamingos. It offers a perfect blend of scenic beauty and wildlife encounters, often serving as an introduction to safaris before visiting larger parks like Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

Landscape and Ecosystems

Arusha National Park is unique for its strikingly varied habitats packed into a small area:

  • Mount Meru: The second-highest mountain in Tanzania (4,566 meters / 14,980 feet), dominating the park and offering excellent hiking opportunities.

  • Ngurdoto Crater: Often called the “mini Ngorongoro,” this extinct volcanic crater is about 3 km in diameter, with steep cliffs and a swampy floor that attracts wildlife.

  • Momella Lakes: Shallow alkaline lakes famous for their flocks of flamingos and rich birdlife. Each lake has a slightly different color due to mineral content.

  • Montane forests: Evergreen forests covering the lower slopes of Mount Meru, home to primates and colorful bird species.

  • Grasslands and savannahs: Supporting grazing animals such as buffalo and warthogs.

Wildlife

Though it does not have the same density of wildlife as Serengeti or Ngorongoro, Arusha National Park is home to a wide range of species:

  • Large Mammals: Giraffes, buffalos, zebras, warthogs, and waterbucks.

  • Primates: Blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys (easily spotted in the forest), and olive baboons.

  • Predators: Leopards and hyenas exist in the park, though sightings are rare.

  • Birdlife: Over 400 bird species, including flamingos, hornbills, turacos, crowned eagles, and bee-eaters.

  • Other animals: Bushbucks, duikers, and hippos around the lakes.

Activities

Arusha National Park offers a variety of experiences not always available in other parks:

  1. Game Drives – Short but scenic drives through varied habitats.

  2. Walking Safaris – Guided by rangers, allowing visitors to explore wildlife and landscapes on foot.

  3. Canoeing on Momella Lakes – A unique way to view hippos, flamingos, and waterbirds up close.

  4. Mount Meru Trekking – A popular climb, often used as an acclimatization trek for those planning to summit Mount Kilimanjaro.

  5. Bird Watching – Especially rewarding around the lakes and forested areas.

Best Time to Visit

  • Dry Season (June – October): Best for game viewing and climbing Mount Meru.

  • Wet Season (November – May): Lush scenery, excellent for birdwatching and photography, though some areas can be muddy.

The park is open year-round and suitable for both short and long visits.

Accessibility

  • By Road: About 45 minutes from Arusha city and just 60 km (1.5 hours) from Kilimanjaro International Airport.

  • By Air: Charter flights available to nearby airstrips.

Because of its location, Arusha National Park is often a convenient first or last stop on a northern Tanzania safari circuit.

Options include:

  • Inside the park: Momella Wildlife Lodge and public campsites.
