Lake Manyara National Park

Introduction

Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s most scenic wildlife destinations, located along the Great Rift Valley escarpment. Covering about 330 square kilometers (127 square miles), with Lake Manyara itself taking up nearly two-thirds of the area, it offers visitors a mix of lush greenery, varied ecosystems, and abundant wildlife.

The park was established in 1960 and is part of Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit, often visited en route to Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti. Despite being smaller than other parks, its diverse habitats and unique wildlife experiences make it a favorite among travelers.

Landscape and Ecosystems

Lake Manyara is famous for its scenic beauty, with a variety of habitats compressed into a relatively small area:

  • Groundwater forests – lush evergreen forests fed by springs, home to baboons, blue monkeys, and forest birds.

  • Acacia woodlands – where the park’s famous tree-climbing lions can be spotted.

  • Open grasslands and floodplains – perfect for grazing animals like zebras, wildebeest, and giraffes.

  • Lake Manyara – a shallow alkaline lake that expands and contracts seasonally, attracting thousands of water birds.

  • Swamps and hot springs (Maji Moto) – adding to the ecological variety.

Wildlife

Lake Manyara National Park is rich in wildlife, despite its compact size:

  • Elephants – the park is known for its large elephant population.

  • Tree-Climbing Lions – one of the park’s unique attractions, though sightings are not guaranteed.

  • Large troops of baboons – among the biggest in Africa, often seen along the forest roads.

  • Hippos – found in pools and the lake’s shallower parts.

  • Giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, and warthogs – roaming the plains.

  • Birdlife – over 400 bird species recorded, including huge flocks of flamingos (especially when water levels are right), pelicans, storks, and fish eagles.

Activities

Visitors to Lake Manyara National Park can enjoy a range of activities, including:

  1. Game Drives – short but rewarding drives through diverse habitats.

  2. Bird Watching – a paradise for bird enthusiasts due to the lake’s seasonal abundance.

  3. Canoeing (seasonal) – when water levels allow, travelers can explore the lake by canoe.

  4. Walking Safaris & Cultural Tours – outside the park, visitors can engage with local Maasai communities or hike the Rift Valley escarpment.

  5. Hot Springs Visit (Maji Moto) – a geothermal area inside the park.

  6. Treetop Canopy Walkway – one of the park’s highlights, offering a chance to explore the forest from above on suspended bridges.

Best Time to Visit

  • Dry Season (June – October): Best for large mammal viewing as animals congregate around water sources.

  • Wet Season (November – May): The park is lush and green; ideal for birdwatching and viewing flamingos, though animals are more spread out.

Accessibility

  • By Road: Just 2 hours (about 125 km) from Arusha, making it one of the most accessible parks in Tanzania.

Accommodation

There are a variety of lodges, tented camps, and budget-friendly options both inside and outside the park:

  • Luxury lodges – with Rift Valley views.
