6 Days Kilimanjaro Climb – Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route is the shortest and steepest trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its direct ascent, rugged terrain, and fewer crowds, it’s ideal for experienced trekkers looking for a challenging adventure. Though demanding, it rewards climbers with breathtaking views and an exciting approach to the summit.

Day to day Itinerary

Day 01 :
Umbwe Gate (1,800m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)

Begin the trek through dense rainforest, with steep trails leading up ridges covered in moss and ferns. Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp for the first night.

  • Hiking time: 5–6 hrs | Habitat: Montane forest
Day 02 :
Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Climb sharply through forest before entering heath and moorland. Stunning views of Kibo Peak appear as you reach the scenic Barranco Valley. Overnight at Barranco Camp.

  • Hiking time: 6–7 hrs | Habitat: Heath & moorland
Day 03 :
Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Start with the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling climb that requires some scrambling but no technical skills. Continue through ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp.

  • Hiking time: 4–5 hrs | Habitat: Alpine desert
Day 04 :
Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Ascend gradually across barren landscapes to Barafu Camp, the base for the summit attempt. Rest early and prepare for the midnight climb to Uhuru Peak.

  • Hiking time: 3–4 hrs | Habitat: Alpine desert
Day 05 :
Summit Day – Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

A midnight start leads you up steep switchbacks to Stella Point (5,739m) and onwards to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. After celebrating, descend to Barafu for a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp.

  • Hiking time: 12–14 hrs | Habitat: Arctic zone → forest
Day 06 :
Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Moshi/Arusha

Descend through rainforest filled with lush vegetation to Mweka Gate, where climbers receive summit certificates before returning to Moshi/Arusha.

  • Hiking time: 3–4 hrs | Habitat: Montane forest

  • Drinks, snacks, or souvenirs outside of provided meals
  • Tips for guides and porters (recommended $15–$20 per day per climber)
  • Accommodation before or after the trek in Arusha or Moshi
