Day to day Itinerary

Day 01 :
Machame Gate (1,800m) → Machame Camp (3,000m)

After registration at the Machame Gate, begin your trek through dense rainforest alive with birdsong, monkeys, and lush green canopies. The trail ascends gradually, introducing you to the mountain’s lower slopes.

  • Arrive at Machame Camp, surrounded by giant trees and misty forest atmosphere.
  • Distance: 11 km | 5–7 hrs trekking

Day 02 :
Machame Camp (3,000m) → Shira Camp (3,840m)

The landscape shifts dramatically as you climb above the treeline into the heather and moorland zone. The path is steeper but rewarding, with expansive views back down toward Moshi town and Mount Meru.

  • Arrive at Cross volcanic ridges to reach the spectacular Shira Plateau, a wide, high-altitude plain.
  • Distance: 5 km | 4–6 hrs trekking

Day 03 :
Shira Camp (3,840m) → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Today is an acclimatization day. Ascend gradually to the Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation that rises sharply against the sky. After resting and lunch at 4,630m, descend into the lush Barranco Valley with its giant Senecio plants.

  • Overnight at Barranco Camp, framed by towering cliffs and the dramatic southern glaciers of Kibo.
  • Distance: 10 km | 6–8 hrs trekking

Day 04 :
Barranco Camp (3,950m) → Karanga Camp (3,995m)
  • Face the exciting challenge of the Barranco Wall, a scramble that rewards climbers with breathtaking views of the valley below. The trail continues through ridges and valleys before reaching Karanga Camp, often described as one of the most beautiful campsites on the route.
  • Distance: 5 km | 4–5 hrs trekking

Day 05 :
Day 5: Karanga Camp (3,995m) → Barafu Camp (4,673m)

The vegetation thins as you enter the high alpine desert. A short but steep climb brings you to Barafu Camp, perched on a ridge with sweeping views of Mawenzi Peak and the summit path ahead.

  • Early dinner and rest are essential, as your summit push begins at midnight.
  • Distance: 4 km | 4–5 hrs trekking

Day 06 :
Day 6: Barafu Camp (4,673m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,100m)

This is the most challenging and rewarding day. Begin your ascent under the stars with headlamps, climbing slowly to Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim. From here, continue along the snowy ridge to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement and take in the sunrise over the continent.

  • Descend carefully back to Barafu, then further down through changing landscapes to Mweka Camp for well-deserved rest.
  • Distance: 17 km | 11–15 hrs trekking

Day 07 :
Mweka Camp (3,100m) → Mweka Gate (1,640m)

Enjoy your final breakfast on the mountain before descending through the enchanting rainforest, filled with birds and colobus monkeys. At Mweka Gate, receive your official Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate.

  • Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for hot showers and celebrations.
  • Distance: 10 km | 3–4 hrs trekking
