After registration at the Machame Gate, begin your trek through dense rainforest alive with birdsong, monkeys, and lush green canopies. The trail ascends gradually, introducing you to the mountain’s lower slopes.
Distance: 11 km | 5–7 hrs trekking
The landscape shifts dramatically as you climb above the treeline into the heather and moorland zone. The path is steeper but rewarding, with expansive views back down toward Moshi town and Mount Meru.
Distance: 5 km | 4–6 hrs trekking
Today is an acclimatization day. Ascend gradually to the Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation that rises sharply against the sky. After resting and lunch at 4,630m, descend into the lush Barranco Valley with its giant Senecio plants.

The vegetation thins as you enter the high alpine desert. A short but steep climb brings you to Barafu Camp, perched on a ridge with sweeping views of Mawenzi Peak and the summit path ahead.

This is the most challenging and rewarding day. Begin your ascent under the stars with headlamps, climbing slowly to Stella Point (5,739m) on the crater rim. From here, continue along the snowy ridge to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement and take in the sunrise over the continent.
